The historic Farmers and Merchants Building in Pilot Point, Texas, is undergoing a thoughtful restoration and adaptive reuse that preserves its architectural character while introducing new uses to support its continued life. As a member of the architectural and design team, I have contributed to the transformation of the building, including plans to adapt the basement into a speakeasy and the second level into short-term rental accommodations. My role included developing the schematic design for the Speakeasy in the basement, exploring spatial organization, atmosphere, materials, and historic character to create an experience appropriate to both the building and its new function. The design approach balances preservation of significant existing features with contemporary building, accessibility, and functional requirements while maintaining the authenticity of the historic environment. Currently under construction (2026-2027), the project demonstrates my experience collaborating on a real-world historic preservation and adaptive reuse project from design development toward the completed built environment.
